They’re not happy for you because they wish it were them -Carlos Wallace

Preface

Natasha Singh sat expressionless in her living room. She sensed as though something had snipped her lifeline.

The petite girl from Chandigarh, Punjab, sighed and gazed at the varied hues of red splashed across the sky. And introspected, ‘’Soon the sun will set for the day. The Mumbaikars are always brimming with a zeal to live life. Mumbai never sleeps. But it doesn’t matter. I’m slipping into an endless, dark abyss. How do I tackle the situation?”

For Singh, the perfidy was unacceptable. One part of her desired revenge, while the other was in complete denial mode. As the thirty-year-old continued to sit as still as a painter’s muse, a phone call disturbed her turmoiled mind. Despite being Natasha’s favorite, the ringtone seemed like a cacophony of squawks. Even as she ignored it, the incessant buzzing of the smartphone kept annoying. Suddenly, a deafening silence engulfed the living room. The Punjabi girl realized she had been holding her breath to control the insurmountable urge to receive and give the relentless caller an earful.

As Natasha exhaled, the harsh reality was putting her through unbearable anguish. But she was also aware that an indestructible wall had been created. Singh felt like she was in the ‘Hot Seat’ in Kaun Banega Crorepati. In her case, the great quizmaster wasn’t the superstar Amitabh Bachchan. But her mind was bombarded with one question after the other.

Caught in a whirlpool, the woman stared blankly at the dozen photographs decorating the lavender-colored wall. Some were with her family, while the rest were with her three best friends. She reminisced when they were enjoying the wedding of Ravi and Payal.

Smiling at the memory, Natasha looked at the framed selfie with four happy faces sipping Champagne. A deluge of emotions overwhelmed Singh as she deep-dived into her Pandora’s box, ‘’Oh, such happier times!! Everything was perfect—a Christian wedding. I was Payal’s Maid of Honour. And Sailesh was the best man….’’

But almost instantly, the peek-a-boo smile on her face vanished and turned into a permanent frown. Then, consumed with uncontrollable rage, the vexed girl ran to the balcony of her twenty-third-floor flat. And let out a scream and broke down into inconsolable tears.

Four freshers sat in the lobby of the five-storied head office of a multinational corporation. Although excited, the associates were on tenterhooks as it was their first day at work. The joiners silently stared around and occasionally gave each other a nervous smile. The sudden whoosh of hot air entered the air-conditioned place whenever the main door swung open. And only the receptionist’s voice filled the otherwise silent office.

“Hi everyone! I’m Natasha Singh from Chandigarh. I believe that all of us will be working together. So, let’s get to know each other?” The other three novices took a break from their reverie to look at the person behind the voice. And saw a girl dressed in a crisp, royal blue, knee-length formal dress, smiling broadly at them. One of the boys reciprocated, “Hi there, I’m Sailesh Tripathi from Kanpur.” Taking a cue, the other two joined in.

The other girl introduced herself as Payal Seth, a resident of Ahmedabad. The last to speak was Ravi Bisht, from a small village called Berinag in Uttarakhand. As the four waited for the receptionist’s call, they continued chit-chatting softly.

‘’So, Natasha, let’s start with you. Tell us something about yourself.” She answered Tripathi pleasantly, “I completed my education in Delhi. And got placed on campus. Working in an MNC is like a dream come true.” Sailesh nodded in agreement, saying, “My story is similar to yours. After completing my post-grad from Bengaluru, campus placement aided me in getting a job. It’s an honor to work here. How about you, Ravi, and Payal?”

Ravi said, “Guys. I’m from a remote village. And I have worked hard to complete my Master’s from Uttaranchal National University, Uttarakhand. Thankfully the recruitment agency sent me an email about a vacancy here. But honestly, I still can’t believe I landed into one of the most prestigious organizations in India.” Hearing his story, Singh exclaimed, “It must have been tough for you. But congratulations on your achievement. It’s really inspiring.”

All three looked at Payal, who uttered, “After my Master’s in Ahmedabad, I applied to various companies. And received an offer letter from one of them. But luck favoured me! The intimation to work with the best in the field arrived at the right time. So, here I am!”

These conversations were interrupted, with the receptionist summoning them to go ahead and meet the Head of Marketing, who was awaiting the new entrants. Feeling considerably calm after the introductory chat, they entered the elevator. And met the famous Karthik Bala Subramaniam in his sea-facing office on the fifth floor.

The youngsters were standing in veneration before India’s most renowned Marketing Strategist. Without wasting precious time, the Head spoke in a soft but firm voice, “Hello everyone, I’d like to welcome you to this organization. And I’m sure you will benefit immensely by working in the best marketing division any MNC can boast of.”

Awestruck and nodding their heads like school children, the four stood before the man who required no introduction. Subramaniam, or Bala as he was famously called, was a man of few words and unmatchable action. He was well known in the business circle for turning the tide of any company with his tactical approach. And would often be revered as India’s Marketing Guru.

Bala continued, “So, without wasting time on silly introductions. As there will be abundant opportunities to know you. Let me introduce you to Mr. Sridhar Mehta. Sridhar, ensure that these young guns learn all about us. And our working style.” And then, turning towards the newcomers, “Mr. Mehta will be supervising you for the next two months. This will be your training cum induction period. Ask as many questions as you can to get a grasp of what will be expected of you. Now go along. All the best!” The joiners scurried out, feeling weighed by Bala’s short and crisp talk.

As Mr. Mehta took the newbies under his wings, he introduced them to their future colleagues in the first week. And they started providing information regarding the Company, its policies, and working techniques. Then, each day, the four were required to perform tasks preparing them for real-life assignments. The rigorous training made Ravi and the others feel they had signed up for the Army. And, Sridhar Mehta didn’t spare a moment to reprimand them for the smallest of follies.

Ravi, Payal, Natasha, and Sailesh gradually bonded in such tiring conditions. They would unwind at the cafeteria during the lunch and coffee breaks. On one such day, a disgruntled Ravi exclaimed, “Oh God! My brain is buzzing. How can we remember so much!” He was the soft one. Sailesh and Payal sympathized with him, as Sridhar was particularly tough on Bisht.

All the while, Natasha kept quiet as she was enjoying the demanding schedules and their challenges. And shot an understanding glance at the beleaguered Ravi and stated, “I feel in the past few days I’ve learned immensely. No management school can substitute for the practical knowledge you gain. I just hope I can excel in my field.”

Listening to her, Sailesh replied, as Ravi’s eyes widened, “I wish the same. And I’m eager to work diligently. But Excellence isn’t my sole aim. My goal is to climb up the ladder at breakneck speed.”

Ravi and Payal were quiet amidst their ambitious peers. Since they were from similar, financially constrained backgrounds, earning money was their primary requisite. The days turned into weeks, and soon, the training period for the marketing associates was over. They celebrated its end and their newfound amity by partying at the trendiest nightclub.

The following Monday, Ravi, Payal, Sailesh, and Natasha sat fervently in their cubicles, ready to begin their journey. However, corporate life can be demanding! And within a short period, the newbies found themselves drowning in work. Being constantly swamped with deadlines, they were forced to defer their weekend plans repeatedly. And they drew strength and solace from each other to handle everyday pressure.

As time elapsed, the residents of different states became inseparable. But, despite the proximity, Sailesh and his gang always focused on competing and focusing on progressing towards their career goals. It was a healthy relationship that deepened with every passing day.

During the first year, the young professionals discovered the “Let’s Test Your Skills” contest, an annual affair conducted by the Marketing Department, where the associates were required to team up with seasoned personnel. This was done to ensure that the entrants learned from the seniors.

A designated task had to be completed in a particular timeframe, with the participants putting their best foot forward. And in the end, the winners would receive a handsome Cash Prize and a trophy. After ten months of joining, the freshers participated in the competition with a determination to succeed.

At the end of the ten days, Natasha’s team was triumphant. The young woman was over the moon, and so were her friends. They all pestered her for a treat at the newest pub in town, to which the prize winner happily obliged. As the first year slipped into the second, third, and fourth, the gang of four worked persistently and gained invaluable experience in the MNC. And continued to participate in “Let’s Test Your Skills.”

But what left the others astounded was that whichever team Singh joined emerged jubilant. She demonstrated exceptional leadership skills and calibre that amazed the department and her superiors. In the initial two years, Payal and the other two passed Natasha’s win as beginner’s luck. But subsequently, they realized that she was a very formidable competitor. The three also observed that Karthik Subramaniam was noticing Singh’s prowess.

Even though Ravi, Payal, and Sailesh were genuinely proud of her achievements. They would pull Natasha’s leg by calling her Bala’s Pet. The girl from Chandigarh would laugh it off by saying, “You all are too much. Don’t be immature. There’s nothing like that.”

“She beat me again!” he grumbled tensely in his one BHK flat. Not stopping there, he spoke again, “Earlier, the difference was marginal. But this time, it’s a landslide victory. I fail to understand how’s she managing? I don’t know what I’ll do if Natasha Singh wins once more. I don’t care if she’s, my friend.”

Entering the kitchen to grab dinner, the tall, athletic-built man continued, “These trophies, special perks, and bonuses belong to me. Natasha is like Rajesh from school. He, too, was always eyeing the first place. And though Rajesh succeeded in doing so only a couple of times. It was agonizing.”

Chuckling to himself, the topper recalled, “Poor Rajesh will never know how I won over the other students and isolated him. Then, due to ‘Silent Bullying,’ the kid was forced to leave school.”

Stroking the beard that the young man had fondly grown, the ranting continued, “Natasha, I don’t want to repeat history. But if you continue your victory streak, I won’t have an option. I won’t let any roadblocks come between me and my goal. Be it a school quiz or a competition at office, I’m the only one worthy of accolades. My desire to become like my idol- Karthik Bala Subramanian, will be achieved by hook or by crook.”

Chewing his food, Natasha’s competitor remembered all those years of school and college. Being more ambitious among the two brothers, luxury and opulence had always been an innate desire, even as an adolescent.

Deep in thought, he recalled, “Focus and Determination have always been my only companions. I have sacrificed my love for movies, get together, and any form of entertainment. I left everything. Even in management school, my batchmates organized parties in their rooms. I would refrain from attending much to their chagrin. And when I’m so close to my dreams. I can’t lose now!”

Breathing heavily, the youngster contemplated, “I don’t perceive the others as a threat. But Natasha, I can’t ignore you. Or the fact that Bala is noticing you.” Smiling to himself, the twenty-seven-year-old evoked the day he had landed his dream job and had met his gang.

As his mind wafted to the first day, he concluded, “Even on that day, Natasha seemed a class apart. Her confidence, intelligence, and smartness had upped my antennas. But as I came to know her, I discovered that Natasha is good-natured too. And wants an excellent career. But I can’t let her spoil my efforts.”

With these last thoughts, the agitated marketing professional went to sleep.

Five years had passed since the now experienced professionals had first met on that hot and humid morning. Since then, the marketing associates have received promotions and a note of appreciation from Bala. Another feather in the cap was that Subramaniam had entrusted them with additional managerial responsibilities. And they were required to train newcomers.

The four were also provided individual flats in a high-rise closer to Nariman Point. One of the major positives of living close was a deeper tie of kinship. Of the lot, Natasha depended on and trusted the others blindly. She was from a family where her father continuously changed cities due to Army postings—giving the young girl no opportunity to have close relations with other children at school. However, now the circumstances had changed. All was going well for her as reliable people surrounded her. And was immensely satisfied at work.

By year-end, the circular for the fifth edition of the ‘Let’s Test your Skills’ contest was distributed. The match had become challenging, with Subramaniam being one of the jury members overseeing the teams’ performance that year. Everyone in the department geared up. But the contest had become a do-or-die situation for one of them.

And the conversation between two other employees added fuel to the fire. He overheard them say, “I’m sure Natasha will win again. There’s no one like her. What an excellent performer! Winning for four years consecutively. Bala is watching her closely. “Feeling his blood boil with anger at these statements, the person whose only target was to beat Natasha exclaimed, “I will not let you win, Natasha Singh.” But, in his quest to ensure that Singh lost, the top-notch marketer failed to realize that his judgment was getting clouded.

The competition commenced. And each group earnestly carried out the designated task. Then, once the taxing fortnight was finally over, everyone enjoyed the office party thrown for the contestants. The management took a week to evaluate the performance. And the following Monday, Natasha didn’t disappoint anyone as Bala declared her team victors. However, Sailesh, Payal, and Ravi shook their heads in disbelief as the champion excitedly walked towards them.

‘’Sailesh, Thank you so much!” Tripathi looked at Natasha as she continued, “How you approach and implement the task! It’s amazing. In the first year, I realized that I was up against the best. You’re the perfect competitor I have ever faced. I’m at the top of this game because of you.” Shocked at Singh’s statements, Sailesh remained quiet. But Ravi commented offensively, “Oh! So, Payal and I are like a cakewalk to you? Is that how you perceive us?” Natasha was speechless. She didn’t expect her support system to turn hostile.

But, as she excused herself, the others gathered that they had overstepped. And so, to pacify, Payal mouthed, “Wait, Natasha! C’mon now. Ravi didn’t mean it. We are very happy for you.” As Payal and Sailesh caught up, they tried to mollify Natasha. But, despite their efforts, the latter stayed subdued. Continuing with their efforts to cheer the girl, the three planned a surprise. And took her to the latest rooftop restaurant to revel. And there, the trio succeeded as Natasha didn’t feel anything amiss. And soon forgot the incident.

Back home, the slightly tipsy girl was in a great mood. She couldn’t imagine a better reward for all the effort she had put in over the years. Natasha was particularly content as Bala was keenly interested in her progress and performance. Singh sighed at the arduous journey.

After all, her early days were marred with memories of her mother being subject to domestic violence. However, the unhappiness that she had experienced made the young woman resolute about leading a better life. And Natasha Singh preferred Excellence over success to achieve her dreams.

Singh was hopeful of a good appraisal. It would allow her to purchase a flat in Mumbai and shift her mother from Chandigarh. That night, the girl felt that her pursuits were paying off. Feeling weary, Singh reclined against the backrest of her bed and drifted towards- Sailesh, Payal, and Ravi.

She thought, “By sheer luck, have I found such people. They truly brighten up my life. But Sailesh and Ravi seem a little distracted! Is something troubling them? Tonight too, although we had fun. I suspect that they are hiding their true feelings. But It’s best not to dwell on these things.”

As she slid further on the bed to sleep, Natasha continued, “Sailesh’s disappointment is natural. From day one, I know he wants to reach the zenith of success. But what happened to Ravi. I will talk to them.”

Being caught up with deadlines, Natasha didn’t get to speak to her besties. And though their stance towards her was restrained, Natasha decided that time would smoothen the undercurrents that made her uncomfortable. The four went on with their time-consuming work schedules. And the breathers at eateries and trendy lounges.

During the long weekend holidays, they would visit and unwind in one of Maharashtra's many beautiful places for rejuvenation. Two months had passed since the contest. And Natasha was relieved to see her equation normalize with her core group. A long weekend was coming up. And as the entire marketing department slipped into a mini vacation mode, they hoped for the clock to tick faster.

Just after lunch, Bala’s secretary messaged and asked Natasha to immediately report to the Head. As lines of worry creased her forehead, the girl couldn’t fathom the reason for such a meeting. Nevertheless, Singh hurried towards the Boss’s chamber. Witnessing their friend run up the staircase left the other three confused. But soon, impatience seeped in when Natasha didn’t return for nearly three hours. Ravi, Payal, and Sailesh discussed the endlessness of the meeting and concluded that something important was being discussed. However, since the wait seemed never-ending, the rest of them trickled out of office.

The following day, the four met at the car park of their complex to leave for their three-day vacation. Sailesh and the others noticed that Natasha was quiet and in deep thought. Although the inquisitiveness to learn about the meeting was paramount, they maintained an air of nonchalance. Even during the car ride, Natasha was not her chirpy self. Although, for some stretches, she would contribute to the conversations.

After a four-hour drive, the vacationers landed in a breathtaking resort near Pune. Feeling starved, they quickly freshened up and headed for a sumptuous lunch. After which, the travellers rested in the reserved four-room suite. A couple of hours later, feeling reenergized, Ravi suggested that they play poker. He knew that this was the best stress reliever for all of them. Agreeing to his suggestion, the tourists enjoyed the game all evening and even post-dinner. And so, nestled away in the gorgeous room, the excited youngsters enjoyed their break. For the time being, all worries and differences were forgotten, even the meeting between Natasha and Bala. Even on the last day, several board games kept the millennials engrossed.

On one instance, after his turn, Sailesh looked up to see Payal nudging Ravi, who was turning scarlet. Unable to control his curiosity, he said, ‘’Guys, let’s pause the game for a second.’’ Sailesh continued, ‘’Payal, you two want to say something?” Ravi and Payal turned crimson at the direct question of their interviewer. Meanwhile, Natasha looked on quietly, feeling puzzled.

Finally, after several seconds, Ravi conceded the truth, ‘’We were going to tell you guys sooner. Payal and I have decided to tie the knot. We have been speaking on these lines for six months.’’ Sailesh’s jaws dropped so much that his tonsils were visible, “For six months???” Natasha screamed, “Really!!! But we didn’t even get a whiff of it! You’re really good at keeping secrets. I’m so excited!”

In an instant, the game was forgotten. Instead, the singletons roasted the two with mock fury. And the soon-to-be couple gave them replies to already anticipated questions. When the session was over, Natasha cleared her throat. Sailesh turned towards her and joked, ‘’Now please don’t tell me, you too are getting married!! I won’t be able to digest it.’’ All four roared with laughter. And Natasha continued, “I’m sorry, Sailesh, you will have to deal with another revelation. Since this has turned into an evening of announcements. I, too, have something important to share.”

As the others looked at her with bated breath, Natasha stated, ‘’Do you remember Bala had asked me to come to his cabin?’’ To which Sailesh replied, ‘’Yes, I do recall. We all wanted to ask you. But thought that you would tell us when the time is right. All’s Okay, I hope? The meeting went on for really long!” “Yes, it did. But what Bala told me was totally out of this world!”

“Go on, the suspense is killing us,” spoke Payal. Then, feeling excited, Natasha gushed, ‘’Guys, I am getting a promotion! And will be heading the West India division. Can you believe it? Subramaniam emphasized that I’m the youngest to achieve this fete in the organization’s history.’’ Ravi, Payal, and Sailesh screamed in unison, “What?”

And an elated Payal presented Natasha with a gorilla hug. That almost had the girl gasping for air. Even though Natasha felt that the faces before her were genuinely happy, she felt a subtle change around her as the ‘air’ suddenly became cool. Natasha’s ‘silent’ competitor felt a four-hundred-volt jolt run through his body. At one point, he sensed Natasha’s eyes were on him as he stared at the marble floor. Then, sighing deeply, he looked at her with his signature smile and exclaimed, “Such super news.”

The boys slapped Natasha’s back. And Sailesh happily announced, “I’m calling for Champagne. It’s on me.” Appreciating his gesture, the other three agreed. But Natasha couldn’t shake off a nagging feeling.

Later at night, Natasha’s nemesis was restless. He kept tossing and turning. The news had destroyed his peace of mind. Finally, as sleep continued to elude him, the irritated man slipped out of the suite for fresh air. And went for a stroll in the resort. Managing to get a quiet spot by the lobby, Sailesh Tripathi parked himself with a loud, ‘’Hmph” as he was like a time bomb waiting to detonate.

Inhaling deeply, Sailesh tried to relax his angry mind. As cool air filled him, Tripathi thought, “What’s so special about Natasha. Bala is totally blinded by her consecutive wins. Not that I fared miserably. And in that competition, we work with seniors. So definitely, it’s not her effort alone. My five years of dedication weren’t worth consideration because I lost every time? Karthik just disqualified me. Why was I overshadowed?”

As annoyance overpowered him, Sailesh started pacing around. As he did so, the thought of Natasha and her success further incensed him. Sailesh Tripathi experienced an implosion within himself, “I won’t let this happen. I’m sorry, Natasha. But you will have to bear the brunt for reaching the finish line before me. Everyone has a vice. And mine is winning. I will ensure that you leave the firm. I’ll miss you. But not my rival.”

And over the next hour or so, the Kanpur man consolidated his devious plan. Chuckling in his trademark style, Sailesh decided to put it into action. And grinned satisfactorily for the first time in months.

Monday morning, the four resumed their regular schedules. Usually, Natasha and Sailesh entered the office premises at approximately the same time. However, she noticed that Tripathi wasn’t in his usual spot that morning. But had already reached the elevator. Feeling strange but short on time, Natasha dashed towards it. And was relieved to see that Sailesh had instinctively kept the door open.

Entering the lift, Natasha commented, “The rigmarole after such a superb weekend! Coming to work is a nightmare, isn’t it? And why weren’t you waiting for me at the parking lot?” The latter nodded, gave her a tight smile, and said, “I had to rush today. Have a meeting with the digital marketers. Sorry, couldn’t wait.”

The newly appointed Head found Sailesh’s body language and actions betraying his words. Again, while discussing the wedding during the lunch break, Natasha saw Tripathi speak unfamiliarly. Being aware of the diligence with which he was working. Natasha could fathom the unhappiness that Sailesh was trying to camouflage unsuccessfully.

Wanting to make him feel better, she approached the topic carefully, ‘’Sailesh, are you perturbed about something?” Tripathi was uncomfortable hearing the genuineness in Singh’s voice. He listened quietly to her and vehemently opposed her query, saying, “Don’t be silly, Natasha. Nothing is bothering me. There’s some trouble at home with my brother. I’m a little worried that he’s not in a job. That’s all.”

Hearing her friend’s predicament, the Punjabi girl advised, “Why don’t you ask him to come here? Then, we can help him, too.” Even though Natasha’s innocence moved the insecure Sailesh, it couldn’t dissuade his desire to sabotage her career. Excusing himself abruptly, Sailesh walked out of the canteen. His mind was at a crossroads.

Taking the stairs to reach the second-floor conference room, he wondered, ‘’In a jiffy, she suggested ways to help my brother. I’m so lucky to have her. But, oh! Why did you get that promotion, Natasha? I don’t want to hurt you. But I have been eyeing this role.”

A steady stream of conflicting thoughts flowed through, “She definitely has a hunch that I’m upset. You understand me so much. But why did you fail to see that ONLY I CAN WIN! I’m the only one who deserves the role. And, now, I can secure it only if you go.” Tripathi wandered as his mind voiced, “I don’t want you to suffer. But within the office, you’re my arch-rival. You dared to shatter my dreams. So there’s only one solution: I have to ensure that you quit. I’m sorry, girl.’’

Sailesh entered the conference room. And mentally decided, “The plan has to be executed subtly. And I need to exercise patience and caution. After all Natasha’s quite popular amongst all our colleagues. My behaviour should be absolutely normal with her. The strategy has to succeed. And only Natasha has to bear the brunt.”

As time passed, Sailesh, Ravi, and Payal assisted Singh in completing her pending assignments. As for the latter, she never shied away from expressing her gratefulness. The entire department applauded the trio for providing Natasha an indomitable support system. On the personal front, Sailesh and Natasha were occupied with organizing the wedding of Ravi and Payal.

Thus on 17th May 2018, Ravi and Payal tied the knot in a simple yet beautiful wedding in Goa. Being a joyous occasion, no stone was left unturned. The wedding was memorable, with a selected guest list, exotic delicacies, and drinks. In addition, the newlyweds and Sailesh surprised Natasha with a small party celebrating her promotion. As in August, she would assume the prestigious role. However, Sailesh could no longer uphold his pretentious demeanor during the revelries. And claiming illness, kept himself locked in his room.

A couple of months passed, and on the stipulated day, Natasha Singh assumed the role of Head of Marketing for West India. The entire department, including the members of the Board and her Boss, wished Natasha good luck by sending congratulatory messages and gifts. A dozen bouquets decorated a large cabin. Despite such an achievement, Natasha felt sad as she had expected Sailesh to be among the first to wish her. And he was nowhere to be seen. Even the just marrieds shrugged their shoulders in ignorance. As the morning went by, her disappointment increased as Ravi and Payal were clueless before the newly appointed Head’s nonstop queries.

After half the day was over, as Natasha exited the lunch room, she saw Sailesh going toward his cubicle. As he looked up and saw his friend, Tripathi smiled at her. And began walking towards her. The young man’s happy face angered Natasha as she clutched her files and walked past him. The entire office noticed the cold shoulder given by the new Head.

Sailesh had mixed emotions when he slumped down on his desk. Rahul Joshi and Payal approached him and exclaimed, ‘’What happened to your hand?’’ There was a crepe bandage tied around the wrist. Sailesh casually stated, ‘I was rushing to reach the office as I wanted to be the first one to wish Natasha. Amidst all the hurry, I fell. And the pressure came on my wrist. Thankfully, there is no fracture. Only a sprain.’’ Payal nodded sympathetically, and so did Rahul. The latter continued, ‘’Bro, I can’t help but say this. The bandage is visible from afar. She turned a deaf ear even though you called out numerously.’’ Sailesh chastised Joshi for speaking ill about Singh.

But also impressed upon him that, ‘’Come on now, Rahul. I know why she ignored me. My absence would have irked her. After all, she must have expected me to be around. But you’re right. How come she didn’t see my bandage? I think she’s stressed as the responsibility is huge. I understand her.’’ Rahul nodded at Sailesh and said, ‘’You are great, Sailesh. I hope our Boss doesn’t forget that.’’

As soon as his teammate’s back was towards him, Sailesh smiled internally. The first seeds of discontent had been planted. Casually, he turned towards Payal, who enquired about the medication prescribed by the doctor and mentioned Natasha’s anger over his absence. For Natasha, the day went by in a flash. However, the high point for her was the meeting she chaired as the Head.

As the day drew closer, the exhausted girl took the elevator to her new office on the fifth floor. As she walked towards her cabin, Natasha recognized the lone figure standing in front of it. Knocking on his shoulders, Natasha waited as Sailesh turned around. Seeing her, the latter commented, ‘Hello Boss!” But it was his bandage that caught her attention.

Astonished, Natasha enquired, “Hey! What happened to your wrist?” On hearing the entire episode, Singh apologized and exclaimed, “I’m so sorry, buddy. I should’ve given you a chance to explain. But I was angry. As you weren’t there when I needed my supporter the most.” A strange concoction of shame and satisfaction engulfed Sailesh. But shaking it off, he gifted Natasha an exquisite eagle made of Emerald. Appreciating the gesture, the new Boss immediately set it on her desk.

The following day, Singh reached before time. And waited for Sailesh to arrive. During the first two years, all four would linger around the parking area for each other and take the elevator together. But only Sailesh and Natasha continued the tradition in the last three years. At 9:00 AM, Tripathi arrived in a cab. And walked toward Singh with lifted eyebrows, ‘’You came in early? How did this happen?’’ Natasha laughed at his observation as she was always the last to reach. The duo chatted till the office commenced at 9:30 AM.

Then, suddenly, Sailesh whispered confidentially, ‘’Now that you will be my Boss, it’s best we maintain a very formal and candid relationship in the office. Otherwise, gossip mongers will spread rumors about me being a sycophant. They will doubt my credibility.” Natasha’s eyes widened. The whole office, including Bala, knew about their companionship. Hence, she was unable to comprehend Tripathi’s transition. Even though Sailesh’s statements had caught her off guard, the girl tried reasoning with him. Natasha would look forward to their chats.

Stubbornly refusing to understand, Sailesh abruptly turned around and left. As Natasha watched the retreating figure with alarm. Little did she notice that Reema, her junior, had witnessed the episode. Later that day, Sailesh, Ravi, and Payal enjoyed a healthy lunch with some of their colleagues. Natasha had an important meeting and so skipped her lunch break.

During the meal, Reema casually mentioned the morning episode. She asked, ‘’Is everything good between you and Natasha? I saw you walk off this morning.’’ Sailesh looked at Reema questioningly, “Why are you asking?” Reema’s inquiry caught everyone’s interest.

After a game of persistence and resistance, Sailesh disclosed, ‘’No one should know about it. I’m trusting you all. Being the Head, Natasha wants a formal relationship with me at the office. I don’t know why she said so. And at the same time, I didn’t appreciate the word she used for you all. I can’t even think of uttering it!”

Pausing and receiving the desired reaction, Sailesh continued, “Ummm!!! Gossip Mongers. That’s the term. I walked off because I didn’t like her bossiness.’’ Tripathi witnessed the color drain from his fellow workers’ faces as the words tumbled out. Even Ravi and Payal were flabbergasted. Reema was also quite enraged.

However, Sailesh continued speaking to drive home his point. And striking while the iron was hot, Tripathi continued, ‘’Now guys, there is nothing like that. She’s pretty bogged down with her new position.”

As Sailesh tried to pacify his fellow workers, Payal and Ravi looked at each other worriedly. They disliked the way Sailesh was speaking ill of Natasha as both knew the latter very well. As the days went by, Tripathi didn’t spare a single opportunity to systematically poison the minds of Natasha’s peers. But he wasn’t surprised that Ravi and Payal refused to fall prey to his mental game. However, the Kanpur man was perseverant.

Oblivious to such occurrences, Natasha nose-dived into her work. But the discernible changes in her colleagues became evident after the first few months of settling into the job. Natasha observed how everyone kept her at arm’s length—and behaved indifferently. She noticed that her team members deliberately kept her waiting for meetings on certain occasions. But unfortunately, Natasha failed to grasp the reason behind such unprofessionalism.

Feeling confused, she enquired from the husband-and-wife duo at their residence. Ravi and Payal listened attentively and replied, “Don’t worry, dear. It will all get sorted out. People are still getting accustomed to the fact that you have assumed such an important position in the firm. After all, we began our journeys together.” “Maybe, but that doesn’t explain everyone’s impassiveness!” asked a bewildered Natasha. “Excepting my floor, nothing has changed. I’m the same person. I view all of you as equals and not subordinates.”

Listening to the explanation, Ravi said, “Since you’re saddled with more work than before. You don’t have time for us or anyone. That’s the reason you’re feeling so.”

Natasha felt dejected at this feedback, saying, “I can’t help it, Ravi. You have no idea how strenuous my life has become. And as things become more streamlined, it will be better. But this detachment is robbing me of my happiness.” “Does Sailesh feel the same?” asked a hurt Natasha.

Ravi’s eyes darted towards Payal as he said, “No, dear! That’s untrue. Sailesh was all praises for you. He’s fine.” Singh looked at them and spoke, “I can understand Sailesh’s dilemma. I felt he was disappointed, but I’m glad he understood. He can take his time. I’m the same person Payal. Stay with me always.”

But as she spoke these words, Natasha felt skeptical as her friends avoided eye contact. However, Singh ignored these actions, assuming that Ravi and Payal might be uncomfortable having this conversation.

On a sultry morning, Natasha was rushing to work. As she drove into the parking lot, Singh spotted Sailesh and smiled to herself, “Finally, Tripathi has come to his senses. I’m sure he’s here for me.” But as she parked the car, Natasha stopped in her tracks. Her smile faded as Sailesh walked away with Reema and Rahul. Despite the pain, Natasha refocused on the important task she had at hand. And on reaching her fifth-floor office, she asked her secretary to inform Sailesh, Payal, and Reema to meet her in the conference room.

“Okay, guys, Bala has entrusted me with an enormous task. And has asked me to create my own team. Since it’s my first major assignment, I have chosen you all. I’m really nervous. And will need your expertise and assistance to guide me through this challenge. Boss will not tolerate any delay.” Saying this, Natasha paused and looked around. And continued, “I’m really excited. As we will be working together.” Natasha felt her hopes dip at their simple and unenthusiastic reciprocation. However, she explained the requirements of the project and its various aspects.

Singh continued, “The details of the projects will also be emailed to you. And post lunch, there will be another round of meetings to discuss the action plan.” A sense of abandonment filled Natasha at her workmate’s clipped tone and curtness during the meeting. But Sailesh, Reema, and Payal left the room, promising prompt delivery.

Since the project’s onset, Natasha has focused on delivering the best. But was dismayed to see her group’s severe lack of dedication. As a result, there were numerous errors from their end. Nevertheless, the girl maintained her composure and showed exemplary skills. Her love for perfection made Natasha assist the other three in every possible instance. Despite her extra efforts, Natasha’s worst fears came true as they were behind schedule.

Finally, a couple of days before the final submission, Natasha called her team members. Upon inquiry and to salvage the situation, Sailesh attempted to beat about the bush. Speaking firmly, Natasha insisted, “Come to the point, Sailesh. I don’t have all day. Plus, do you even realize I’ve been correcting mistakes that a fresher will not make. And three of you have so much experience. So this delay is not excusable.”

While, on the one hand, Natasha was engulfed with fury, Sailesh was rejoicing at the success of his plan. A wave of anger swept through Natasha as she continued, “The last few months, I have been noticing all of you and have ignored your aloofness. But I did not expect that you would be so unprofessional. And mess around with the Company’s reputation? And I thought that you’ll be my strength and support.”

Even as she agitatedly stormed out, Natasha couldn’t help but notice the lack of remorse amongst the three.

Being a true leader, Natasha entered Karthik’s cabin to inform him of the situation. And stood motionless as Bala reprimanded her mercilessly. Finally, apologizing profusely, the teary-eyed girl took the entire responsibility. Back in her cabin, Natasha stayed glued to her laptop. And immersed herself in work to divert her exploding mind. After an hour, there was a knock on the door.

“Come in.”, she responded tiredly. Ravi felt sympathetic as he gazed at Natasha’s exhausted face. At that juncture, pre-empting Ravi, Natasha remarked,” Please inform them that I’ve got the situation under control. I shouldered the blame. You want something more from me?” Wordlessly, Ravi left the room.

During the lunch break, Natasha entered the fourth floor to go to the cafeteria. And saw Ravi, Payal, Sailesh, and two other associates huddled in a group. They seemed hooked on some incident that one of them was gleefully narrating. The room was echoing with their laughter. Despite being strong, Natasha felt lonely watching her gang chat animatedly.

As they continued their banter, Singh noticed Ravi speaking seriously in a low tone. From his expression, the onlooker knew she was the topic of discussion. And then, there was a swift change in the facial expression and body language of Reema, Payal, and Sailesh. And they stopped laughing. At that moment, Sailesh saw Natasha. The two stared at each other, and Singh froze.

Instead of regret, Tripathi had a satisfied look and an emotion that the girl couldn’t place her finger on. Suddenly, her instincts warned her to be wary of Sailesh. Natasha proceeded towards the canteen, feeling anxious. And felt Sailesh’s eyes following her. She could sense his elation at her distress.

On the following weekend, Tripathi was sitting alone in his flat. And was dealing with mixed emotions. Fear was slowly creeping in. His mind’s ability to scheme had left the young man shaken. With a can of beer perspiring on his side table, he analyzed, ‘’Why did she do this? When she could have easily gone Scott-free. After all, we were the culprits. So then, is she really that considerate? Are my insecurities and frustrations blinding me? Has Natasha understood my intentions? No, I don’t think so.”

Sailesh couldn’t come to any conclusion. His old self felt guilty for putting his mate through so much suffering. But soon, as though possessed by the devil, Sailesh continued maliciously, ‘’No! I don’t think so. She deserves this treatment. Natasha Singh! Miss Perfect. Trying to be saintly! This is part of your image-building process. You kept winning. I don’t have to doubt myself. Bala’s Pet in the true sense. But soon, people will know you as a snobbish person. No one will respect you!”

And then, speaking out loudly, he imitated his friend, “Sailesh, you’re a superb competitor. You bring out the best in me.” “Nonsense!!! What double standards, Natasha!” muttered Sailesh in a voice filled with anger and hatred.

As weeks turned into months, Natasha continuously experienced uneasiness. Even Ravi and Payal felt distant. Everyone’s emotionless expressions were negatively impacting her productivity. And draining Natasha of her energy at the office. On the other hand, Sailesh felt himself inching toward his purpose.

Natasha also observed that Tripathi acknowledged her only when they were having a one-on-one discussion. But turned his back on her before their co-workers. Over time, Natasha experienced complete isolation. And felt alone in her department. Her ever-increasing workload ensured that the Head was tied to her desk or traveling to various cities in her region.

To top it all, the extensive duties accompanying her role swallowed up her weekends. And with the bit of time she had for herself, Natasha preferred crashing on the bed.

But Singh was oblivious that her absence only emboldened the others, especially Sailesh. It was a Friday evening, and Natasha had a free weekend after what seemed an eternity. She wanted to seize this opportunity to obtain some direct answers. I asked Ravi, Payal, and Sailesh if they would like to revisit the resort in Pune.

Natasha was a mix of joy and unsurety when the plan took shape. Setting aside these doubts, she viewed this as an opportunity to clear all misunderstandings. And hoped that her core group would be as it was before.

The four in the same suite made up for all the lost time. It was great to unwind. Even Sailesh was his old self. After a while, Natasha confronted the three, “Is everything okay with you all? Why are Reema, Rahul, and Meera speaking so tersely? I feel even you three avoid me. Is there an issue?”

Knowing that her compeers were feigning ignorance, Natasha coaxed them to reply. The muted response agitated the girl. Speaking harshly, she alleged, “Why are you all like this? Ever since I received a promotion, everything has changed. “ Looking at her upset friend, Payal replied, “No, dear, you’re feeling so. Being the Head is huge. You’re accountable for your actions. And have a lot on your plate. And thus have little time for enjoyment.”

Seconding her, Sailesh spoke patiently, “Don’t worry, Natasha. Everything is fine. And Payal is right. Since you’re the Boss, everyone maintains a distance. But all of us really look up to you.”

Natasha looked at Ravi, who had been quiet all along. Then, staring at the carpet, the boy from Uttarakhand reiterated what the others had uttered. And continued, “This was bound to happen, Natasha. Even though we’re together, and will be. We rarely get to meet you. And we’re genuinely surprised that you planned this trip. Because on previous occasions, you would refrain from venturing out with us. Giving us the notion that we were indeed your subordinates.”

Natasha felt disheartened at this statement. As if that was not enough, Ravi hit the nail on the Head as he conveyed, “These guys won’t tell you this. But we feel that your position has come between us. It’s sad but true.”

On hearing this, Natasha felt as though she was sitting with a bunch of strangers. Her mind was racing. Unable to filter the information, she excused herself for the rest of the day. And was further dismayed to see her pals enjoy in her absence. While crying in her room, Singh gloomily accepted that her confidante’s behavior was unbecoming. And they were a manipulative lot.

However, the perception that her friends might have collectively conspired against her seemed unlikely. And soon, Singh concluded, “One of you is the Mastermind! Who has turned everyone against me!”

After a tough weekend, a tired Head entered her office premises. The conversation in the Pune resort played incessantly in her mind. Then, walking absent-mindedly, she approached the receptionist’s desk. But without a word, Natasha turned left to walk up the stairs. Singh wished alone in the first-floor conference room to clear her Head. But a bunch of muffled voices stopped her in her tracks.

‘’Oh! You should have seen the alarm on her face! I still laugh at her expression. Such a two-faced person. Serves her right to snub her aides. And calling us Gossip Mongers.’’ On hearing Reema’s shrill voice, Natasha stopped breathing. And stood there transfixed, wondering, ‘’ Whom did I snub? And two-faced? Is that what they think of me?’’

She didn’t have to wait too long. The next voice felt like a slap on her face as Sailesh said, ‘’I had no inkling that she would be so condescending. And even in Pune, she asked us: what’s wrong with everyone? As though she doesn’t know that her promotion has made her arrogant.”

“Are you serious?” exclaimed Rahul.

“Yes, that’s true. I told Natasha off in Pune. And then that girl faked that she was hurt. Such a hypocrite. Had it not been for Sailesh, we would have never known that she doesn’t respect Payal and me. Our dear pal made us see past Natasha’s sweet lies and false innocence.” Ravi’s soft voice was unmistakable.

Natasha felt immobilized with every passing second.

“Thanks, man! You know Reema, even during the competitions, Singh never acknowledged that Ravi and I could win. Imagine her haughtiness. Thanks so much, Sailesh! I wish we had listened to you earlier, “ Payal’s voice filled with dislike.

“How did you guys put up with her for so long?” asked Rahul. Natasha had tears streaming down her face. Payal Seth’s words floated, “The sweet talk with Sailesh after the promotion made me want to throw up. But this time, in Pune, we gave her a clear indication that we don’t perceive her as before. And without any co-operation from us it will be difficult for her to continue. Knowing her, I’m sure that she will leave the Company, quite soon. Being the ‘good friend’ that she is.”

There was laughter and murmurs of agreement from the five persons. But, for the eavesdropper, the voices were like a hundred daggers. Natasha realized that it had been Sailesh all along. He had been envious of her achievements. Be it the yearly competitions or the current position that she had been entrusted with. Natasha felt certain about one thing- Sailesh was like Brutus.

A feeling of nausea forced Natasha to rush towards the elevator. Thankfully, she didn’t have to wait long to reach her fifth-floor restroom. As tears wet her cheeks, Singh tried to calm herself by splashing water on her face. Back in the cabin, she was unable to control her suffering. And hastily drew the blinds. No amount of deep breathing lowered her peaked tension levels.

Natasha quietly replayed the events that had unfolded since her promotion. Then, finally, the practicality made her realize she couldn’t work effectively in such a hostile environment. A new workplace and surroundings would provide her with much-needed respite.

She also understood that this alteration would assist her in forgetting this unpleasant experience. So, without much ado, she decided to quit at the earliest. And exited her cabin to apprise Bala of her decision.

Just then, Sailesh entered the fifth floor for a prescheduled meeting. He stood transfixed on Natasha’s dazed state as she looked up to see Tripathi; a sudden anger engulfed Natasha. Stomping toward him, the woman covered the distance between them in a split second. And spoke roughly, “Why? I thought you were my well-wisher!”

Not wanting to give Sailesh the satisfaction of seeing her broken, Natasha speedily walked towards Bala’s chamber and knocked on the door. As for Tripathi, the bizarre reaction made him jittery. He quickly messaged Ravi and Payal and informed them about Natasha’s outburst. As he waited in the lobby, an email from Bala’s office surprised Sailesh. Per the email, all meetings had been cancelled for those under Natasha’s supervision.

Even though Sailesh returned to his desk, the frail look on Natasha’s face kept flashing before him. Worried, the three officegoers kept a tab on the time for which Singh was in Karthik’s office. And while Ravi, Payal, and Sailesh stared at their screens, the rest of the team members were whispering. They had got a whiff of the occurrences. Natasha had not departed from Bala’s office.

As time passed, Ravi, Payal, and Sailesh stayed glued to their seats.

Meanwhile, Bala was in a pensive mood. Natasha had shared her decision to quit the organization for better prospects. Being an astute player, one look at her had confirmed Subramaniam’s doubts. He understood that his prodigy was hiding the truth.

Tackling the situation very carefully, he coaxed Natasha into spilling the beans in no time. Listening attentively to her narrative, including that morning’s conversation. The ace strategist grasped that the disloyalty of her closest aides had broken Natasha’s fiery spirit.

Once Singh finished, Bala pondered over the matter. Attempting to soothe the heartbroken girl, Karthik spoke gently, “Natasha, you’ve got to think rationally. And turn your adversities into strength. I have a solution to your problem. And you will not have to ruin your bright future for such people.” He continued the conversation and explained the course of action to Natasha.

Subramaniam concluded the meeting and asked her to take the day off. Ravi, Payal, and Sailesh were in total disarray when they saw Natasha leave the office.

However, they continued working mechanically.

Back home….

Natasha tried to divert her mind by performing mundane house chores. Then, finally, sleep rescued the traumatized girl. But this respite was for a short while.

“So much Envy! The elatedness and Genuity regarding my promotion. What a performance! You should be in theatre or films. And all this time. The only emotion that you nurtured was jealousy! Both of us had worked hard. Maybe I got rewarded before you. So, what! Friendship is not based on such parameters. Instead of being happy, you turned everyone against me?”

Singh woke up with a start with these thoughts plaguing her brain. Feeling restless, Natasha started pacing the length of the room. And spoke to an invisible audience, “I wonder why people let such sentiments overpower them. Ravi and Payal believed Sailesh so swiftly. Sailesh, you have the gift of the gab. How easily you succeeded in swaying those two. And they forgot their values. You were blinded by the strongest negative trait in the world. And even if I forgive, the trust destroyed can’t be restored again. You all will never find peace. Nor will I. But who will make you guys understand?”

With escalating frustration levels, Natasha continued as though speaking to her tormentors, ‘’All this ruckus! It’s unbelievable. I would’ve been happy had it been any of you. You fools! Relations matter the most. Why? What was the need?”

Gradually, the topper from Punjab went back in time. And some long-forgotten incidents resurfaced. In hindsight, Singh remembered the smug look on everyone’s face whenever she was in trouble. She became aware that the project submission was delayed purposely. It had nearly cost her job and their top client. The most painful part was that the team had let her bear the brunt of their mistakes. Ruminating about them, she suddenly laughed at her folly.

Natasha sighed, “I ignored all these signals. The red flags were there. I trusted them blindly.”

With every step she took, the poor girl felt suffocated. Natasha was filled with a deep sense of affliction. Since relocating and beginning her career at the Maximum City, Payal, Sailesh, and Ravi had been her family. However, the unforeseen occurrences made Natasha feel that her most prized possession had been smashed into a thousand pieces.

The young woman desired to rewind and erase the conversation she had heard earlier that day. In the last six months, the change in everyone’s attitude did give her an intuitive feeling about being targeted. But she never suspected the ones responsible were those she called her own. Staring at Payal’s wedding picture, Natasha smiled and thought, “What a surprise these two had given us!”

And then the smiling faces in the pictures made her cry, “How can they do this? Ravi, Payal, Reema, and the others got brainwashed. What was the use of ruining my reputation? How can you be so cunning, Sailesh?’’

Despair filled the troubled girl. But then she recalled Bala’s advice. She remembered his words, “Don’t leave the Company, Natasha. Stay back. That’s the way to punish. If you leave, your unworthy friends will win. So don’t give them that satisfaction. Instead, become the most successful Marketing Strategist. I’m with you. And we will create an absolutely new team.” His advice gave her hope and a way to move forward.

The following day…

Natasha parked the car. And walked into her cabin sharp at 9:30 AM. Finally, she was ready to face her most formidable challenge. Instantly, she messaged Ravi, Payal, and Sailesh to meet her. As she took her seat, her eyes settled on the showpiece gifted by Sailesh. Natasha was tempted to smash the Emerald eagle into a zillion pieces. But being mature, she took a deep breath to release her exasperation.

After a while, Ravi tentatively knocked on her door. ‘’Come in,’’ she said placidly. As soon as the trio entered, Singh was unrecognizable to them. The color had left her face, but Natasha’s eyes had a new vigor. Sailesh saw that she was staring at the Emerald eagle. It was then Natasha gazed at him. Dreadfully, Sailesh realized that his intentions had come to the forefront. But the icy, stern look with which Singh viewed Payal made the latter think, “If looks could kill, I would’ve been dead by now.”

Even before a word of self-defense could be uttered, Natasha spoke in a composed manner, “Relationships are priceless. Money, fame, and progress are important. But they don’t supersede the love you receive from your near and dear ones. So I had no inkling that the very people I banked on would stab me brutally.”

Singh was experiencing a level of numbness that one feels when one loses a loved one. And in this state of mind, she spoke philosophically, ‘’Generally, people say if one has a good set of friends or even a single friend, half the battle is won. Such an individual is blessed with an impenetrable support system. But what happens when the very people you trust emerge as the chink in the Armor?” The culprits hung their heads in shame on hearing Natasha’s utterances.

Ravi moved towards her, but the Head stopped him, saying, “Stop right there. I’ve called you for another reason. I’m not leaving the Company, as all of you had dearly wished. For a brief moment, I was swayed to be the ‘good friend’ I am. I’m so sorry, Sailesh, all your efforts to ensure my exit have not borne the desired fruit.” Sailesh stood muted as covetousness had been replaced by Guilt.

However, Natasha continued, “If only……Anyway, I don’t wish to drag this matter. And it will be in your best interest to accept that I am the Head of Marketing for West India. And one more thing. If there’s any unwarranted issue regarding projects. Karthik will know whom to hold accountable. I have informed him of the dirty politics you’ll have been playing.”

Natasha’s erstwhile pals stared at her and realized they had lost a gem of a person. Sailesh knew it was too late to repent. Nevertheless, spoke pleadingly, “Natasha, I’m sorry.”

However, Natasha ignored her and continued, “This gift you gave me will always be a reminder of your Envy and Betrayal. But I hope someday you will realize that jealousy is not the answer to any problem. And yes, convey my decision to stay here to the rest of them.”

Saying this, Natasha signalled them to leave. She quietly got up and looked through her blinds. And saw the trio head towards the staircase. Then, choked with emotions, she mentally noted that Ravi, Payal, and others would soon regret their mistake.

At lunch break, she went to the fourth floor. And as she stood at the door, Singh saw a sea of guilty faces. Natasha Singh knew taking the bull by the horns was the only way out. And by continuing her job in the organization, she had taken the first step to find peace and strength.

Steeling herself, the Head of Marketing entered the floor for the associate managers. All eyes were on her. Natasha stared straight ahead and walked with her Head held high towards the cafeteria.

Only the clicking of her heels could be heard distinctly.
